"It's interesting that you're seeing the MATHIA
name spelled "MATYJE".
My Mom used to tell me that she thought the original
spelling was "MATYJA" ----- so she wasn't too far off,
was she?
How do you & Kurt pronounce the name MATHIA?
My parents always pronounced it (& so do I)
like "MA-thee-yah" (with the accent on the "MA") and
with the "MA" sounding like the "ma" in the word
"map". However, my dad's relatives that lived where
he was born (in Berlin, Wisconsin) pronouce it
more like "Ma-TEE-yah" (with the accent on the "TEE")
and the "Ma" sounding like the "ma" in "machine".
When I pronounce my name, you definitely "hear" the
"h"; but when my Berlin, WI relatives say it, there
is no "h" sound." Bob Mathia
We leave the "h" sound out! My father insisted.
We have seen the"Matyja" spelling on records also.
Karen
